There are only a few things I am as certain of as this. Things cost stuff. Think about it – last time you were in Walmart you probably got stuff and I will bet that somebody paid for it. If nobody paid, then you participated in a crime. Last time you had a meal somebody paid. Even reading this is costing you something.
Well, this is a bit disconcerting. Everybody wants something from you; everything takes stuff from you. Why are you here? I am not asking the big, “What is life for?” question. Your attendance at here costs you something. Have you ever thought about how you are investing your 24 hours each day? Each day you spend all that time on something. Sometimes you even spend energy along with that time. You purchase something from it. This time comes to us freely, and our willingness to hold a conversation with someone is a natural part of being human. We spend these like they are worthless, but with them we can get the most valuable thing – Jesus.
We can also get a lot of things we don’t want. I bought an uncomfortable silence the other day; I know someone who purchased a few dirty looks from across the dinner table. Why is it that people freak out at the name Jesus? Is it because they want to run their lives? Is it because they do not wish for any accountability? Is it because all they know is the judgmental attitude of an un-loving church? Is it because they have seen Ned Flanders and think that is not for them? Or is it because Jesus is offering something beyond value?
The love of God is worth more than anything we have to offer Him, but the funny part is, that currency we find of no value, our time, is most of what He asks for. Love, Respect, and Time are God’s requests of us. Love Him and love others. Respect His rules for what is right and what is wrong; respect each other. Give Him your time. Sometimes we buy stuff with our time that we do not want. Isn’t it funny how with something so inconsequential as my time, I can spend time with the Lord who loves me enough to have died for me. My Lord and my God, Jesus
