I was reading something that jumped off of the page at me. I would like to share it with you. It came out of Luke 2:9-20. I wont quote it here for you, but essentially there are these shepherds out in a field taking care of the sheep. All of a sudden one angel appears and they all panic; the angel says relax I have got something to tell you – Jesus is born. The shepherds relax. Then an army of angels appears, singing praises unto the Lord, and tells them that the news is for everybody. They find the baby; then shepherds take off running into town to tell people what just happened. They sing praises to God and everybody is convinced that inventing sliced bread is not worth the time compared to what they have just found.
Now look at these shepherds. They are out in the field making sure that the wolves don’t eat the sheep or that the sheep just don’t wander off for no good reason. It is a really crappy job. Imagine if you will a mob of pre-schoolers. You cannot just send 200 or so off to the playground by themselves. Some will get lost; others will get mad and storm off. Just because there are 200 of them does not mean that they will scare off those creepy guys who should go to jail for about seven million years with nasty sharp poking things shoved into them constantly while they are forced to listen to about 2 seconds of the same song over and over and over….. ummm yeah. So about those sheep, someone needs to take care of them.
The shepherds are an interesting group of people. This angel appears and they freak out, but it says relax, so they relax. The angel says the Savior of the World has just been born. Fear? What fear all they know is that salvation is coming. Just a second ago one angel had them “sore afraid” now a whole army of them shows up and all they can think about is “where is this Messiah?” “He is in a manger wrapped in garments for the dead.” They go immediately, and you know what? There is a baby in a manger wrapped in garments for the dead. They tell everybody and cry out about how awesome God is.
What about those sheep? It wasn’t just irresponsible to leave them behind – it was stupid. They got to see Jesus for doing it though. I think the point here is this: if I let the big and important stuff I am doing hold me back from seeing Jesus, then I have missed a chance at an audience with God. Am I saying cut class, skip work, and don’t do your homework? No, but maybe ten minutes of that time could be better spent meeting with Jesus.
